Using humor to add tension

Practical jokes can be used to build tension. By setting up the main character in the most ironic situation, tension is built. Tension can also be derived from a coincidence, an unexpected gag, or from the worst possible thing that could happen. All of the proceeding can be humorous at the same time it builds up tension.
